Call for Applications

The Society of Fellows in the Humanities at HKU invites applications for the 2021-2022 intake. Up to six Post-Doctoral Fellowships will commence on August 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter, for a period of three years. Submission deadline is 23:00 on February 1, 2021 (Hong Kong Time).

Application Guidelines

Eligibility
The Society of Fellows invites applications from qualified candidates who have a PhD degree conferred after January 1, 2018. Candidates will have defended or submitted their dissertation by December 31, 2020 and their degree conferred not later than May 31, 2021. They will not be currently employed in tenure-track positions. Applications from candidates who hold a PhD degree from the University of Hong Kong will not be considered.

Deadline for Applications
The deadline for application is 23:00 on Monday, February 1, 2021 (Hong Kong time).

Application Documents
Applicants shall complete their application online and submit the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Cover letter not exceeding 300 words
  • A research proposal not exceeding 1,500 words (excluding bibliography). Proposals are vetted by specialists as well as non-specialists.
  • One writing sample: one dissertation chapter or one published article
  • Three letters of recommendation to be submitted in PDF format directly to the Society by referees via email to: sofhku@hku.hk. Letters should be addressed the Director of Society of Fellows in the Humanities. Letterhead is preferred. Applicants shall reach out for the letters; the Society/HKU will not approach the referees.

All applications documents, including the letters of recommendation, must be submitted by the deadline for your application to be considered. There is no application fee. Please do not send a transcript of graduate courses or grades. Only applications submitted via the HKU’s career site will be considered. Applications should be submitted with all attachments in PDF format.

Notification to Applicants
Successful applicants will be notified by email by the end of March 2021 at the latest. Please notify us should there be any update to your email address.

Appointment Details

Each successful applicant will be given a three-year appointment as Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Society of Fellows. Up to 6 Fellowships will be offered. The Fellowship appointment is not tenure-track and is non-renewable. Successful applicants are expected to take up their appointment from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2024.

A globally competitive package including a monthly salary, housing allowance, medical benefits, annual leave, and conference and research support will be offered to successful applicants. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. Fellows are expected to reside in Hong Kong for the duration of their appointment but may carry out research abroad in accordance with university guidelines.

Fellows will be expected to teach two courses during the term of their appointment, and are required to submit a brief, annual summary of their activities and accomplishments. The University of Hong Kong is an English-medium university. A host department within the Faculty will be selected on the basis of a Fellow’s proposed area of research. It is not necessary to contact Departments/Schools or Faculty members for a potential supervisor.

Fellows will be expected to cite their affiliation with the Society of Fellows in any publications that result from research work undertaken during the term of their appointment and to provide the Faculty with copies of these publications.

The Society aims to establish a vibrant research community in which Fellows interact among themselves and with other members of the Faculty. They will be invited to initiate and participate in seminars, talks and other university activities. A dedicated Society of Fellows communal space has been created to facilitate engagement and collaboration.
